Winter 2009

Comments from the Administrator

Summer has come and gone. This means back on schedule - Winter, cold, snow, holidays and fundraisers.

Some parents have been great coming to our financial aid in spite of economic stress. Some still need to better understand our dilemma.

Families have assisted with candy sales, Have a Heart, donations, Gaming Night, Art Walk, and in giving time.

More reports at November 14, 2009 Parent meeting at 10:00 a.m.

Also, important, speaker on November 14, 2009 Robert H. Farley, Esq. "Updates on legal matters".

Thank you so much to everyone with your support so we can continue service.

Sr. Theresa Tamburo

Annual Walk for Peace

A group went to "The Shrine of the Christ's Passion" at St. John's, Indiana and thoroughly enjoyed the prayerful atmosphere and the forty life size bronze statues. Rain interfered with the seconds group's tour.

We took the journey with Jesus. A half mile winding pathway that began at the Last Supper and Garden of Gethsemane and ended at the Glorious Ascension into Heaven.

Our prayer, "Jesus bring peace to the world".

The world is turning, there's so much hate.
Is it because we can't communicate?
What is the problem?
We are all alike.
We must get together,
Before it's too late.

Holidays as Special

St. Rose Center seems to be following the traditional pattern of looking forward to yet another holiday season. Over the next couple of months we will all take part in Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is a whirlwind of activity. There is one individual who attends St. Rose Center who began planning Halloween around August and I think that kind of spirit is easily shared and echoed.

The individuals are very much a part of planning for the events such as suggesting to Sr. Theresa what to eat and what kind of music they would like to dance to. The conversations take place over breaks, large groups' lunch and sneakily into the small group's planned activities. Between events they discuss WHO they want to dance with, though often it becomes a group dance with circles of people opening and closing as new alliances form. The individuals talk about eating and games and giving of gifts as if it were their most natural expression of self.

This is my tenth year of being at St. Rose Center, so I've developed some experience enough to know that there is not much more exciting here at the center than our holiday traditions. Pumpkins are placed in corners and then their place is taken over by turkeys and cornucopias and canned drives, then finally we'll see a tree or two and several Holy mangers scenes. Passing by tables in the groups or multi-purpose room you hear conservations like "What will you be? I'm going to beÉ" or, "I'm going to get my MomÉ", or I'm so excited I can hardly wait!" Generosity is sprinkled over imagination and the result lays the route of abundantly fluent gifts given showing loves passage.

This year I'm blessed to have reunited with family that had once been separate. I look forward to that set of relationships developing over the holiday, but on an everyday, in and out congruent manner, I give thanks to my St. Rose Center family for making the days go by so wonderfully. I feel St. Rose as a blessing. I feel much validated in its worth.

Merry Cheer to all this holiday season.

St. Rose Sculptors

Group IV chose sculpting and collages for their Summer Art Projects. They focused on "Found Art" which is created by items that would usually be discarded. They used various items such as cans, bottles, yarn, cardboard and foil.

One of the creations was a "Can Man". They also created an ocean scene by using foam sculpting beads and cool wax.

They learned about the famous sculpture in Daley Plaza created by Pablo Picasso and the "Junk Art" on Oak Street Beach.

For the collages they chose pictures from magazines to create different themes on cereal boxes - food, animal babies and baseball.

Some of the art was displayed at Kristoffer's Café.

Group I has had a busy October with workshop alone! They have had jobs stringing and tying beads/bracelets, sorting and putting together groups of tags, putting together Leo's taps, and cleaning housings for newest job. Although we've had a lot of work it has allowed us to work together and communicate with one another. None of us can believe how busy we've been or how fast the month went by. We are looking forward to future events such as, helping out at the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) and learning to be thankful since November is a special time to help those less fortunate than we are and a time for Thanksgiving.
